CDPHP Takes Major Step As Lead Sponsor Of The Capital Region American Heart Association Start! Walk

CDPHP is taking the lead in the Capital Region as a major sponsor of the American Heart Association’s Start! campaign, and its president and CEO, Dr. John D. Bennett, has signed on as chair of the Start! Heart Walk, which will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at The Crossings in Colonie. Employees, too, are rallying behind the cause, forming teams to participate in the annual walk and raising funds year-round to support research and educational programs that fight cardiovascular disease, our nation’s No. 1 killer.

Start! is a national initiative dedicated to helping individuals, families, and communities achieve a healthy lifestyle through physical activity and nutrition. The program focuses on the workplace, encouraging businesses to offer healthy food in vending machines and cafeterias and to provide staffers the opportunity to take regular breaks for walking or other exercise.  New Sponsor, Same Race: The CDPHP Workforce Team Challenge

CDPHP is the new lead sponsor of the Workforce Team Challenge, the largest annual road race between Utica and New York City. This year, the 3.5-mile race/walk will be held on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at the Empire State Plaza in Albany.

Open to teams from area businesses and organizations, the race helps to underwrite the programs and services of the Hudson Mohawk Road Runners Club (HMRRC), one of the largest running clubs in the nation. The Club offers scholarships to college-bound high school seniors, grants for youth running programs, seminars and clinics for runners, in addition to coordinating local running events throughout the year and publishing a monthly running magazine.

This year, participant contributions will also support the critical services of the Boys and Girls Club of Albany, an organization that provides a safe environment and relevant programs and services to support the personal development of area youth, many of whom are disadvantaged.

CDPHP Lends Support to the Regional Food Bank's Backpack Program

CDPHP® and the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York have again joined forces to help hungry children in our community through the food bank’s BackPack Program. This year, CDPHP donated $5,000 toward this crucial program and offered to match every donation of $100 or more, up to an additional $5,000, through the end of 2009.

Launched locally in 2007, the BackPack Program helps combat childhood hunger by providing needy children in grades K through six with nutritious, easy-to-prepare food at times when other resources are not available, such as on weekends. Bags filled with staples are discreetly placed into the children's backpacks each Friday afternoon.

As the need for such nutritional supplemental programs has grown exponentially, the program has been expanded to include schools in Schoharie, Troy, and Warrensburg, as well as four Albany schools that adopted the program in December 2009.

CDPHP, Red Cross Partner for Disaster Preparedness

In partnership with the American Red Cross of Northeastern New York, CDPHP is title sponsor of the "Be Red Cross Ready" disaster readiness program offered throughout the region.

The program teaches basic yet effective survival techniques in the event of an emergency, illness outbreak, or natural disaster. Health educators at CDPHP receive special training from the Red Cross in order to bring this important service to its membership, and CDPHP funds the program for the public at large as a community service.

Coaches vs. Cancer: Staying Well is a Team Effort

CDPHP is partnering with the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches to support "Coaches vs. Cancer," a nationwide initiative dedicated to increasing cancer awareness, funding cancer research and advocacy programs, and promoting healthy living year-round.

Through this program, coaches across the country devote their time and talents to raise awareness about the fight against cancer, emphasize the importance of nutrition and physical activity in reducing one's risk of the disease, and promote the American Cancer Society as an important, 24/7 resource for people who have been diagnosed with cancer.

Locally, CDPHP is the mission sponsor of the Coaches vs. Cancer Basket Ball, which will be held Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Troy, NY.  For more information, click here .
