Joshua Kaufman, MD, joined CDPHP in February 2023 and currently serves as medical director, behavioral health and medical integration. In this role, Dr. Kaufman provides physician leadership to ensure the mental and physical health needs of CDPHP members are addressed and optimized. He is also rigorously involved in behavioral health utilization management and leads various quality improvement projects. Dr. Kaufman currently holds a faculty appointment at Stony Brook University Hospital to further his passion for teaching and clinical innovation.
Prior to joining CDPHP, Dr. Kaufman worked in telepsychiatry, providing general and addiction psychiatric outpatient care. With his extensive research background and specialization in PET neuroimaging, Dr. Kaufman previously investigated severe mood disorders and the pathophysiology of substance use disorders.
Dr. Kaufman is a native New Yorker, growing up on Long Island, New York, and attending Stony Brook University and Stony Brook University School of Medicine. He completed his adult psychiatry residency at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan, New York, and completed his addiction psychiatry fellowship at Northwell Hospital in Queens, New York. Dr. Kaufman is double board certified in adult general psychiatry and addiction psychiatry.
Dr. Kaufman has a deep passion for keeping up to date on cutting edge, evidence-based treatments for substance use disorders, particularly opioid use disorder, and expanding access to mental health services. Dr. Kaufman is also a strong advocate for the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) in mental health care and the health care system. In his free time, Dr. Kaufman enjoys spending time with his family, exercising, and travelling.
